In the last few years more and more golden retrievers have been diagnosed with Taurine Deficient Dilated Cardiolmyopathy, a heart disease that can be fatal.
Research is currently being done to figure out what, but it is suspected there is a link between grain free diets and the disease. Until research is conclusive it is recommended that golden retriever owners should not feed their dogs foods with potatoes, peas, chickpeas, and legumes.
What SHOULD we feed? I’m still trying to find what canine nutritionists say, but ALL the cardiologists say feed foods with grains from one of the five dog food manufacturers who do research. Those five companies are:
- Royal Canin
I NEVER thought I would feed anything from any of these companies, but when one of my goldens was recently diagnosed with possible DCM, we added Purina kibble to her diet. She hasn’t had a firm poop since, so we continue our search for a food so she’ll have a healthy heart and the rest of her body.
